Janet Read
Janet usually makes work in response to places that have left a lasting impression or to human rights issues that are important to her. Recent examples include her Workhouse Series, a group of six pieces which grew from her research in a Poor Law archive. Five pieces entitled When the Rain Stops, together with an individual wall hanging, Footfall, reference the restorative impact of walking in familiar places during the pandemic lockdown. She is currently developing work based on the experience of people who escaped the bombing of UK cities in the Second World War by simply Trekking away from their homes. One of her most important projects was LB’s Justice Quilt, made to celebrate the life and mourn the death of a young learning disabled man, ‘LB’. It was a collaborative work made by Janet, Janis Firming, Jean Draper and Margaret Taylor from hundreds of fragments of cloth contributed by people from all over the UK and seven other countries. It is currently exhibited in the People’s History Museum in Manchester.
